Meet Olivia

Olivia Soares is a dedicated youth leader currently in her second year as a Youth Board Member for the United Way. She is an extremely involved student at La Citadelle High School, where she holds the role of Student Council Prime-Minister. In this leadership position she heads a council with a current goal to create a more inclusive environment and a safe place that students are excited to come to in the morning. She also leads the morning announcement team to keep the student body of over 400 informed daily. She demonstrates her leadership when leading weekly meetings, coordinating with teachers and organising activities that impact the students. For her commitment and leadership she has twice received an award for leadership in French language and exemplary volunteer commitment for the school. On top of her school involvement she also applies her people skills and drive to her part time job at the local Food Basics.

I live in SD&G and attend school in Cornwall, so I am deeply connected to this region. I felt a responsibility to contribute to the communities that have always supported me. Joining the United Way Board of Directors gave me the opportunity to represent the next generation of community leaders and try to bridge the gap between youth and community organisations. It has also been a great experience to learn and grow thanks to the dedicated and experienced professionals I have the pleasure of working with.

As a youth board member I believe I bring a fresh energy to the board as well as unique insights into student issues that otherwise might not come to the board’s attention. I am especially passionate about speaking up for those who have trouble doing it themselves or aren’t being heard. During my tenure as Prime-Minister we have just started a project where we create monthly video capsules featuring students participating in various school activities, challenges and Q&A’s to build more fun and camaraderie between students. This focus on belonging, equity and mental wellness aligns closely with the United Way’s mission to support the most vulnerable in our community.

Someone who has always inspired me to get involved is one of my teachers. She’s consistently there to lend a helping hand and jumps into everything with an open mind and a positive attitude. She truly inspired me to be more involved and help others wherever I can because it is extremely fulfi lling. Once I joined the board, I have been inspired in each meeting by the dedication of the staff and other board members who are so passionate about helping people and want the best for our beautiful community.
